Do you need a lawyer?

Notice: The Kansas Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service is not a law firm and does not represent clients in any capacity. The LRS is not providing you any legal advice and you do not have an attorney-client relationship with the LRS. The KBA makes no warranties or representations concerning a lawyer’s ability to handle a caller’s particular legal matter. The decision to employ a lawyer is solely that of the caller, subject to the lawyer’s willingness to accept employment. The LRS refers clients to licensed and experienced attorneys who have registered to receive referrals in specific areas of law and who are in good standing with the Kansas Supreme Court.

Helpful tips on submitting your request for an attorney

  • Include dates. When did this take place? Was it over a period of time (if so, include the date it started and ended).
  • Where did this take place? What city/county?
  • Has anything been done to address the situation? For example, if it is an employment issue, please include any attempts by you or your employer to address the situation. Have you provided or received anything in writing?
  • Include the name and location of the opposing party. For example, if it is hospital or physician, include the name(s) and locations of both. Are you related to the opposing party? If so, include what that relationship is and if the opposing party has an attorney.
  • If you are not sure which category to select, select Other. After we review your request, we can assign it to the correct category.

Note: Providing details will help us determine the next step. Delays in processing your request will occur if we do not have enough information. KBA LRS attorneys charge fees. Please do not submit a request if you need pro bono or reduced fee services.

Frequently Asked Questions

All KBA Lawyer Referral Service attorneys have been carefully screened for experience and other qualifications. On average, LRS attorneys have been practicing law for twenty years and are skilled in over one hundred areas of law, including family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant matters, personal injury, and worker’s compensation law.
There is no fee charged for a referral to a lawyer who is a part of the KBA Lawyer Referral Service. If you decide to consult with or retain the attorney, you should ask what fees are charged for a consultation and additional services. It is important to understand how the fees are determined and when they will need to be paid. Ask the attorney to provide a written agreement that states what services will be performed and what the services will cost. In situations when it is impossible to determine the exact fee, the attorney should provide an estimate.
If you have been physically injured at work, at home, or in an accident, attorney fees are often dependent on you receiving a settlement or judgment. Usually the attorney's fee will be based on a percentage of you settlement or judgment. Cases of legal or medical malpractice are often handled in a manner similar to the above.
To make the most of your first consultation with an attorney you should bring all relevant documents and information. The names, addresses, and telephone numbers of people involved and documents, such as lease agreements and contracts, will help the attorney understand your particular problem.
All attorneys who participate in the KBA Lawyer Referral Service charge attorney fees. Each individual attorney establishes his or her own fee schedule. Some attorneys require retainers (payments made by the client before any work begins) and some attorneys accept payment plan agreements. Some attorneys provide for payment to be made through a combination of a retainer and a payment plan for any fees required beyond the initial retainer. In certain cases such as bankruptcy, personal injury, and medical malpractice matters, a lawyer may only take a fee if you are successful in obtaining a settlement or judgment.
