Kansas Bar Foundation Scholarships

Details and Requirements

The Kansas Bar Foundation will soon announce the availability of its 2025 scholarships. Listed below are the various scholarships and corresponding eligibility criteria and application requirements. All scholarships require the applicant to have the intent to practice law in the state of Kansas.

Please check here in November to access the 2025 application. Applications will be due in mid-January. 

Applications must be completed, signed, and dated and must be submitted with any additional application materials. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Recipients will be announced in late February 2025. 

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding funds to a student admitted to attend or who is attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. The scholarship is intended to help law students become lawyers in the mold of Frank Rice who was "among the finest … in the Bar. He was at the top of his class … and always applied the highest level of legal scholarship to any legal matter in which he was involved."

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a Kansas resident
  • Admitted to attend or currently attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship will be given to a law student at the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. Applicants should exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives, as demonstrated in application materials and letters of recommendation. Applicants should also demonstrate a history of involvement in their community along with a bona fide intention to practice law in Kansas. Applicants must submit a letter of intention, and two letters of recommendation, from Kansas lawyers or law professors, with their completed application.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation from KBA members (may be a professor who is a KBA member)
  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship promotes the practice of plaintiff’s work as well as the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding an applicant who exhibits professionalism and high character in their academic and personal life and has demonstrated participation in school and community activities. The award will be based in large part upon a student's financial need. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 2L or 3L at Washburn
  • Must not be receiving any other scholarship support

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship is available exclusively to Washburn University School of Law in their second or third year of study who are NOT receiving any other scholarship support. The award will be based on financial need and merit.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 2L or 3L at Washburn
  • Must not be receiving any other scholarship support

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation from KBA members (may be a professor who is a KBA member)
  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship promotes community service by awarding a law student attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law who has demonstrated a history of community involvement. Application materials should demonstrate the applicant's professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives. The award will be based in large part upon the student's merit or recommendation rather than financial need. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation from KBA members (may be a professor who is a KBA member)
  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship was established by the MVP Law Firm for incoming students with demonstrated interest to practice in Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, or Iowa in workers' compensation, civil litigation, or insurance defense. Although not required as a condition of the scholarship, the recipient will have the opportunity to be matched with a mentor from MVP Law and have a shadowing opportunity over the semester break. Applicants must exhibit MVP's core values and beliefs. Our core believes of respect for everyone, building real relations, and maintaining a reputation for excellence have allowed the firm to flourish for more than 120 years. An award will be based on student participation in college/law school, community activities, financial need, and academic achievement.

  • Short two- to three-paragraph statement as to how applicant believes they demonstrate MVP's core values and beliefs

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding a law student attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law who is committed to practicing law in Kansas. An award will be based on merit and recommendations rather than financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law
  • Must be a Kansas resident

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation from KBA members (may be a professor who is a KBA member)
  • Current law school transcript

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in rural Kansas. Applicants must originally be from Kansas and attending either the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law. Additionally, applicants must be committed to practicing law in rural Kansas, preferably western Kansas. An award will be based on merit and recommendations rather than financial need.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law
  • Originally from Kansas
  • Completion of at least 60 credit hours
  • Bona fide intent to practice in rural Kansas

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation from KBA members (may be a professor who is a KBA member)
  • Current law school transcript

These scholarships promote the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding two 3L students, one from Washburn University and one from the University of Kansas. Applicants must exhibit exemplary leadership in promoting diversity and inclusion within their law school and/or broader legal community. Recipients will be provided the opportunity to author an 850-word article about diversity and inclusion matters in the legal profession and justice system to be published in the Diversity Corner of the Kansas Bar Journal and the recipients will be invited to serve on the KBA Diversity Committee.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 3L attending the University of Kansas School of Law or Washburn University School of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Summary of efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within law school and/or legal community

This scholarship promotes the practice of law in the state of Kansas by awarding funds to a student who has demonstrated a bona fide intent to practice law in the state of Kansas. Applicants must exhibit professionalism and high character in their personal and professional lives as demonstrated in application materials. The award will be based on student participation in law school, community activities, financial need, and academic achievement. Students of culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a 2L at Washburn, KU, Creighton, or Oklahoma City Schools of Law

Additional Application Materials

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Current law school transcript

To speed up your application process, please have these materials and links ready before you begin filling out the scholarship application form:

  • College or law school transcript — This can be a digital file, a URL, or printed and mailed.
  • Names of the persons writing your two letters of recommendation. NOTE: The letters can be general (to cover any scholarship you have applied for) and should be addressed to:

Depending on the scholarships you apply for, you may be asked a combination of the following essay questions with a maximum answer of 500 words each:

  • Briefly describe why you decided to go to law school.
  • Please describe your plans to practice in Kansas.
  • Briefly describe how this scholarship would benefit you financially and beyond.
  • Please summarize your efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within your law school and/or the legal community. (Capitol Federal Foundation Diversity Scholarships)
  • Briefly describe your participation in events and or extracurricular programs at your law school.
  • Briefly describe your volunteer community service experience. Include charities, non-profit organizations, clubs, etc. (Do not include activities related to law school. They should be recorded in the previous question.)
  • Please list awards/honors/scholarships that you have received in the past six years.
  • Please list your paid work experience during the past five years. Please provide the number of hours worked per week or month for each position.
